01 / The engineering problem

Field installation is where orbital welding delivers its biggest delta over manual TIG.

An oil-and-gas site has all the variables that hurt manual welders: pipes are out-of-round, walls vary across the circumference, ambient temperature swings 30 degrees over a shift, and operators get fatigued at the limits of an awkward 6G position. Manual TIG reject rates often climb above 15% on these jobs — not because the welders are bad, but because the conditions are.

Orbital welding doesn’t remove the conditions. It removes the operator’s burden of compensating for them in real time. The K-series open-frame head’s AVC (Arc Voltage Control) tracks arc length across each rotation, so when the wall is thinner on one side of the pipe, the arc stays the same.

The open ring also means the welder doesn’t need a tube chamber — which matters in field retrofits and tie-ins where the pipe is already installed. For instrumentation tubing (¼″–1″), C-series micro-orbital heads run on the separate FXT20 compact power source — a typical oil and gas site fleet carries both power sources, one for production pipe and one for small instrumentation lines.

For larger transmission pipeline (≥φ219 mm), the K600 track-type head extends the platform on the same FXT40 Pro.

Many of our oil and gas customers run two-person crews (welder + helper) instead of the three-person crews legacy systems require.
