01 / What it is

A cold-cutting planetary pipe cutter for weld-end preparation — the upstream step before orbital welding.

The CM series uses planetary cold-cutting technology: the pipe clamps stationary in the machine while the cutter blade orbits around the pipe OD. Unlike angle grinders or abrasive cut-off wheels, planetary cutting is geometrically constrained — the cut path follows the pipe circumference precisely, producing a square end face with consistent perpendicularity regardless of operator skill. No heat, no HAZ (heat-affected zone), no thermal distortion of the pipe end geometry.

On closed-head orbital welding (FXT20 + C-series), end-face quality is the primary upstream variable. A non-square or burred tube end creates uneven fit-up gaps, which cause asymmetric root formation, arc-start failures, and burn-through on thin-wall tube. The CM3 is the standard pipe preparation tool for semiconductor EP piping, pharmaceutical WFI systems, and food/beverage sanitary lines before FXT20 orbital welding. The larger CM8 and CM12 serve petrochemical carbon steel and shipbuilding copper and plastic pipe.

Blade replacement is completed in under 3 minutes using a standard 22mm open-end wrench. The front guard is detachable for special pipe fittings and tight-access situations.

04 / Where CM cutters are used

Application by industry and workflow.

→ Semiconductor & Electronics

EP-grade 316L stainless tubing for gas delivery systems.

Semiconductor gas cabinet (BCU) piping uses φ6.35–12.7mm 316L EP-grade stainless tube at wall thicknesses of 0.9–1.5mm. Any burr, non-square end, or thermal damage at the tube end becomes a particle source inside the gas delivery system. The CM3 — at 20kg, small enough to operate inside a cabinet workflow — produces a clean, square cold-cut end face that feeds directly into the FXT20 + C-series orbital welding process without further dressing.

Model: CM3 (φ6–80mm). Material: 316L EP-grade stainless. Next step: FXT20 + C5 / C10 / C40 orbital welding.

→ Pharmaceutical & Food

WFI / CIP / SIP sanitary piping in GMP environments.

Pharmaceutical WFI (Water for Injection) and CIP (Clean-in-Place) systems use 304 / 316L sanitary-grade tube to 3-A and GMP standards. Cold cutting avoids the thermal oxide ring that hot cutting or grinding leaves at the tube end — an oxide ring that no post-cut cleaning process reliably removes from the interior surface. The CM3 and CM4 cover the typical φ12–114mm sanitary pipe range and produce end faces that meet the fit-up tolerance (< 0.1mm gap) that GMP orbital welding procedures require.

Models: CM3 (φ6–80mm) · CM4 (φ12–120mm). Next step: LPM tube facing (if needed) then FXT20 + C-series orbital welding.

→ Petrochemical & Field

On-site carbon steel and stainless process pipe cutting.

Petrochemical field installation and maintenance cuts carbon steel, stainless, and alloy pipe at the job site where band saws and lathes are impractical. The CM4, CM6, CM8, and CM12 cover φ12–330mm field pipe with no fixed workstation required. An optional tripod and lifting platform supports field deployment. CM6 with the auxiliary claw accessory adds field beveling capability for V-groove preparation before FXT40 Pro + K-series or G168 track-type orbital welding.

Models: CM4–CM12. Next step: CM6 (optional bevel) then FXT40 Pro + K-series or G168 orbital welding.

→ Shipbuilding & HVAC

Copper, aluminum, and plastic pipe for marine and mechanical systems.

Shipbuilding uses copper pipe for refrigeration and hydraulic systems, aluminum for lightweight structural lines, and plastic (PVDF, PP) for chemical-resistant drainage. HVAC systems use copper refrigerant line and PE water distribution. The CM series cuts all these materials cold without the oxide and thermal stress that flame or friction cutting creates, and without the HAZ issues that affect copper work hardening at the cut face.

Models: CM3–CM8 depending on pipe OD. Materials: Copper · aluminum · PVDF · PP · PE · PVC.

05 / Common questions

What buyers ask before ordering.

Which model do I need for my pipe size?

Select by OD: CM3 for φ6–80mm, CM4 for φ12–120mm, CM6 for φ16–171mm, CM8 for φ55–228mm, CM12 for φ140–330mm. If your pipe OD falls in an overlap zone (e.g., φ60mm is in both CM3 and CM4 range), choose the smaller model — it is lighter and more portable, and the clamping force is calibrated for the full range within each model.

Can it cut stainless steel 316L for EP-grade applications?

Yes. All CM models support stainless steel 304 / 316L cutting. The planetary cold cutting process produces a burr-free, thermally unaffected end face that meets EP-grade pipe preparation requirements. No post-cut polishing or deburring is needed for standard orbital welding fit-up.

Can it cut titanium alloy pipe?

Yes, with a titanium-compatible blade. Specify the material when ordering so we can confirm the correct blade selection. Titanium alloy requires a different blade grade than standard stainless or carbon steel.

Can it be used in the field without a fixed workbench?

Yes. All CM models are designed for field use. The CM3 at 20kg is hand-portable. For larger models, we offer an optional tripod + lifting platform that eliminates the need for a desktop installation or workbench. The machine ships in a multi-layer plywood case for transport protection.

How long does blade replacement take?

Under 3 minutes using a standard 22mm open-end wrench. We provide a detailed illustrated blade-change procedure in the instruction manual and video guidance on first use. Spare blades are shipped within 48 hours.

What is the wall thickness limit?

All CM models are rated for wall thickness 1–5mm. For pipe with wall thickness > 5mm, a split-frame pipe cutting and beveling machine is the correct tool — see the YPD split-frame series.

FAQ

  • What is a planetary pipe cutting machine, and how does it benefit pipeline welding?

A planetary pipe cutting machine, such as the CM series, is a professional tool designed for high-precision cold cutting. Unlike traditional methods, the blade orbits around the stationary pipe, ensuring the pipe end is perfectly square and burr-free. This provides an ideal, ready-to-weld surface for subsequent automatic orbital welding, fundamentally improving weld quality and consistency.

  • Why is cold cutting better than angle grinder cutting for stainless steel pipes?

Angle grinders often cause uneven end faces and heat-affected zones, which can compromise welding integrity. The CM series planetary cutter uses a cold cutting process, which maintains the pipe’s metallurgical properties, ensures high perpendicularity, and eliminates the need for manual deburring, making it compliant with GMP and semiconductor industry standards.

  • What is the cutting range of the CM series planetary pipe cutters?

The CM series offers a comprehensive range covering pipe diameters from 6mm to 330mm (1/4" to 13"). The series includes several models: the ultra-portable CM3 (6-80mm), the mid-range CM6 (16-171mm), and the large-capacity CM12 (140-330mm). All models support a wall thickness adaptation of 1-5mm.

  • Can the CM series cut materials other than stainless steel?

Yes. The CM series is a versatile "all-material" solution. It is equipped with 6-speed electronic speed regulation (85-210 RPM), allowing it to efficiently cut 304/316L stainless steel, carbon steel, copper, aluminum, titanium alloys, and even plastic pipes like PE, PP, and PVC.

  • Is the CM series pipe cutting machine portable for on-site field operations?

Absolutely. The CM3 model weighs only 20kg, making it light enough to be hand-carried for field transfers. Its compact, modular design means it doesn't require a fixed workstation, making it the perfect choice for pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and HVAC on-site installations.

  • How fast can I change the blade and prepare for a cut with the CM series?

Efficiency is a core feature. Blade replacement can be completed within 3 minutes using a standard 22mm wrench. The quick clamping system allows for cutting preparation to be finished in minutes, increasing overall processing efficiency by over 50% compared to traditional manual or band saw methods.

  • What safety features are built into the CM series pipe cutter?

The CM series includes an automatic overload protection system with a red light warning that triggers an automatic shutdown to protect the motor. It also features a fully enclosed guard to prevent chip splash and a self-locking emergency stop design, ensuring maximum operator safety in industrial environments.

  • Does the CM series support special pipe fittings like elbows and tees?

Yes. The machine features a detachable front guard that supports the cutting of special fittings such as elbows and tees. This modular flexibility ensures that the CM series can handle complex pipeline configurations beyond simple straight pipes.

  • How does the CM series fit into a complete pipeline welding workflow?

The CM series is the first step in a one-stop pipeline welding total solution. We recommend combining the Planetary Pipe Cutting Machine with our Pipe End Facing Machine and Enclosed Automatic Orbital Welding Machine. This integrated workflow ensures that every pipe end is cut, faced, and welded with surgical precision and zero contamination.

  • What after-sales support does Feiyide (FYID) provide for the CM series?

We offer a 12-month whole-machine warranty, including the motor. For international customers, we provide 7×18 hours online video support and ensure that common spare parts (like blades) are shipped within 48 hours to minimize downtime.
